TPW - Toscana Photographic Workshop: The European Center for Creative Photography
Toscana Photographic Workshop is a centre where one has the possibility to attend photographic workshops with major international photographers. TPW started in 1993, but was officially founded in 1994. During these years it has grown exponentially, filling up a precise need in the world of photographic education. The intention is to communicate to the students a particular photographic vision, which they would then go on to develop in the following years. We are not a traditional school: our classrooms and meeting spaces vary from an old castle to farmhouses and old barns, from sunflower fields to a caf in the piazza of a city where we have our workshops. The teachers at TPW are internationally known professional photographers who dedicate a week of their time to the students, in order to share their personal photographic technique and aesthetic. We can count on photographers from National Geographic, and from the photo agencies Magnum, VII, NOOR and VU. The week runs in a very simple way: during the workshop teachers examine the portfolios brought by the students, classes on technical and aesthetic matters are conducted, teachers show their work and, with constant help, students produce new photographs. On the last night there is a final slide show presentation of the students work, and the morning after is the moment when students and teachers discuss the work developed during the week and make plans for future projects. The week at TPW does not end in six days. Teachers and students stay in touch after the workshop exchanging ideas, asking opinions about their work, supporting each other on new photographic projects: in a few words, creating a dynamic photographic community. TPW is mostly a place of confrontation and learning, not only of photographic technique , but of all those aspects from how to promote one s work to how to publish it or expose it in a show; from how to create a portfolio to how to photograph in critical situations aspects which are needed...
