I am a fine art photographer. I specialize in nude and sensual art, but also shoot some fantasy art, still life, abstracts, and landscape and nature work. I also offer fine art portraits for teens through adults, and intimate photography boudoir, glamour, maternity for adult individuals and couples. I have shown my work in several group shows and solo exhibitions around the Pacific Northwest and sold work to collectors in several countries. My training in photography is a mixture of self-study, experience, and occasional formal education. In addition to producing fine art photography, I teach individual photography lessons and provides photography services for charitable causes. Photography is widely acknowledged as a documentary medium, and some even claim that its documentary aspect is the essence of its nature. For me, though, there is no question that the true magic of photography lays in its expressive potential. Expressive photography is not about recording events, truth, reality . It is about exposing feelings, beauty, surprises and exploring possibilities, complexities, subtleties . When someone asks what kind of photography I do, I often say I am a photographer of feelings, because that s really what I search for in the viewfinder. Exposing and capturing seen feelings - emotions that are experienced visually - is the goal of my work. Most of the images on my gallery pages are for sale as signed and numbered prints. I personally create, print, and prepare every image I sell. I use state-of-the-art pigmented inks on Crane s Museo Silver Rag paper, and conservation grade mounting and framing materials. When properly cared for, these gallery-quality pigmented ink prints also known as gicl e prints have an archival life expectancy beyond one century.

Carl Johnson Photography offers photography services for weddings sports events corporate and portraits. We also offer a variety of fine art prints in nature scenic and wildlife images from Alaska national parks the southwest and Pacific northwest. Who I am as an artist, what is my particular style, is as much a product of my experience as well as my philosophy. I started as a photojournalist while serving in the Navy, but expanded my focus to include nature photography while working as a canoe guide in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota. My experience as a canoe guide brought more than just exposure to wild places and things. I grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota, so I knew a little about the outdoors. My time in the Boundary Waters also infused in me a philosophy about how to interact with wild places, how to cherish wildness as expressed by Thoreau, that I had never before encountered. Inspired by the writings of Sigurd Olson and others, I came to learn and experience anew an ideal of wild places that merged with my photography and photographic philosophy. Despite, and because of, my love for outdoor and nature photography, I continue to photograph portraits, sports, weddings, special events, and other things on assignment. You may wonder why, if I love the outdoors so much, I would photograph other subjects. I like to keep my style fresh by not becoming too entrenched in any one subject. It is easy to spot someone who does nothing but wedding photography or nothing but portraits. Their photos fall into a sometimes predictable style. By approaching photography from diverse viewpoints, I often bring techniques and ideas from other disciplines that might not always be expected.
