The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, New York, NY

Official Website for The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. Robert Mapplethorpe was born in 1946 in Floral Park, Queens. Of his childhood he said, "I come from suburban America. It was a very safe environment and it was a good place to come from in that it was a good place to leave." In 1963, Mapplethorpe enrolled at Pratt Institute in nearby Brooklyn, where he studied drawing, painting, and sculpture. Influenced by artists such as Joseph Cornell and Marcel Duchamp, he also experimented with various materials in mixed-media collages, including photographs cut from books and magazines. He acquired a Polaroid camera in 1970 and.... His vast, provocative, and powerful body of work has established him as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Today Mapplethorpe is represented by galleries in North and South America and Europe and his work can be found in the collections of major Museums around the world. Beyond the art historical and social significance of his work, his legacy lives on through the work of the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. He established the Foundation in 1988 to promote photography, support museums that exhibit photographic art, and to fund medical research in the fight against AIDS and HIV-related infection.

black and white street photography by Markus Hartel New York street photography blog urban views

As a teenager I bought my first camera and did more or less point and shoot photography, but within a few years I developed the necessary technical skills for serious photography. Later on, I owned a shop for graphic design & prepress and used one of the first digital SLRs to create beautiful product shots for my clients. Nowadays, I find myself wandering through the streets of New York City enjoying street photography.

Black and White Photography by Guarionex - Soho NYC

Black and White Photography by Guarionex - Soho NYC

Exquisite fine art black and white photography by Guarionex. An artist with over 40 years in the medium. For over 40 years Guarionex has had a love affair with what he calls urban abstracts. While many great photographers have found wonderful inspiration in nature, Guarionex has found it in his beautiful concrete apple, New York City. In alleyways and sidestreets he sees and captures the hidden beauty many of us often overlook. For me the city is a never ending visual banquet, and I have been known not to wipe my mouth These unique urban abstractions are an amalgam of texture, form and tone, creating in the viewer a feeling of aesthetic satisfaction. I photograph as a natural response to the delight around me. I see lines, shapes; the rest is a matter of composition. Philosophy is what you say, poetry is how you say it, and composition is the foundation of visual poetry.
