Hand Colored and Black & White Fine Art Photography by Donna St Amant of still life floral seascapes landscapes and travel locations. Hand Coloring allows me to modify a Black & White image, bringing forward the subject as my imagination sees it. I am intrigued by the gradual transformation that takes place as the thin layers of transparent oil paints and pencils are applied. Not bound by questioning whether the colors are ‘true’ but rather allowing them to unfold with each layer and follow a path that enhances the feeling of that individual image. Although the subjects are wide in range, in general my work conveys a feeling of stillness and simplicity. I strive to slow down the pace of life and bring forward a feeling of peaceful beauty and relaxation for the viewer.

....since diagnosing myself as a borderline mute, I've allowed my photographs to do the talking for me. I understand that they might not always make sense to the viewer, nor do I expect them to. How often do people understand one another through verbal communication anyways? I consider that sometimes it is more helpful to just feel what another person is going through rather than disputing their emotions and wondering whether or not the way they feel is justified. Photography has supplied me with the comfort and freedom to express my ideas and interactions more openly.

Andrew Xenios has been working as an artist since 1964. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Chemistry as well as a Master of Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design. Currently Mr. Xenios is the director of the Athenaeum of Photography, a small public library and school in Marblehead, Massachusetts. His studio and home are in Merida, Yucatan, where he photographs, paints, and etches, as well as conducts tours and classes in black and white photography with emphasis on the modern Spanish influences and Mayan culture. He has also made three photographic trips to Cuba.
