VirtualParks.org was conceived as a visual documentary of special places in North America. Natural or wilderness lands provide refuge and inspiration for people as well as habitat for other species. The pressure of population, economic growth, park budget cuts, climate change, and catastrophic events often encroaches upon our green spaces and wilderness lands. It is my hope that through experiencing the special beauty of our wild lands, the public will better understand the value of open space & wilderness and want to preserve it for future generations to enjoy. When shooting these scenes, there was also a sense that many of these locations will never be the same again; some may improve, some may be destroyed--because geological and environmental change is inevitable. People usually think of big changes only occurring in millennial timescales, but all it takes is one natural disaster Indian Ocean tsunami, Mt. St. Helens, earthquake on the San Andreas fault to devastate an area for generations. Not to mention man-made disasters such as giant forest fires. These panoramas provide a unique documentary record of what specific places looked like at recorded moments in history. The tremendous amount of effort that goes into making these immersive experiences a way of honoring a moment, a sentient awareness, and a place. Many of these scenes might require ten thousand words to describe; yet the power of this medium is that one immersive panorama can impart even more than those many words. If you think any of these virtual reality panoramas are impressive, consider that most people who view the same panorama as a four to five foot wide print find the print more striking. One of the most gratifying results has been how people who might not otherwise be able to visit a wilderness location could enjoy them on VirtualParks.org.

The most familiar rotating camera panoramas are of large groups such as this one taken in Michigan in 1923. Rotating panoramic cameras have been around since the late 19th Century. The name Lookaround discribes the way the camera works as well as the way the pictures are viewed. They are scroll-like and invite browsing in the way one looks around within a real scene. Dale Malmedal was raised in a rural farming community in northeastern Colorado only a few short hours from the front range of the Rocky Mountians. Throughout his childhood family camping in the mountains came to be the anticipated pastime. His fond memories of his early experineces in the high country were very family oriented and blossomed into a passion for the wild places that remain in North America. During High School and into his young adult life he developed a love of backpacking. He has backpacked the wilds of the Pintlar and Beartooth Mountains of Montana, the Wind Rivers of Wyoming and throughout Colorado and into New Mexico. Throughout this time he also started to capture the beauty of these wild areas on film. Coming from a family background of photographers and print makers, this became a natural extension of his love of the outdoors. It was, in fact, during his High School career that Dale truly began to develop his artistic talent with the camera. He was duly recongnized by an award for news photography. After High School his vision also came to include something else. Prompted by his desire to be used in a special religious service his adult years took him away from the Rockies to the Mid-West. There he met his future wife, Gaelynne, and they were wed in 1979. Since their marriage, Dale has also instilled in his wife the same passion for the wild areas that he developed during childhood. Dale s career as a professional photographic artist began in the summer of 1995, when he and his wife began touring with Dale s work on the juried art festival circuit. Dale has exhibited his work throughout the United States. His artistic talent has been recognized by various awards during this time. While Dale still exhibits at art festivals on occasion he has settled down in his own gallery in the heart of the area he loves most, the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado.
