Mary Ellen Mark Photographs

MARY ELLEN MARK has achieved worldwide visibility through her numerous books, exhibitions and editorial magazine work. She is a contributing photographer to The New Yorker and has published photo-essays and portraits in such publications as LIFE, New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Vanity Fair. For over four decades, she has traveled extensively to make pictures that reflect a high degree of humanism. Today, she is recognized as one of our most respected and influential photographers. Her images of our world s diverse cultures have become landmarks in the field of documentary photography. Her portrayals of Mother Teresa, Indian circuses, and brothels in Bombay were the product of many years of work in India. A photo essay on runaway children in Seattle became the basis of the academy award nominated film STREETWISE, directed and photographed by her husband, Martin Bell. Mary Ellen was presented with the Cornell Capa Award by the International Center of Photography in 2001. She has also received the Infinity Award for Journalism, an Erna & Victor Hasselblad Foundation Grant, and a Walter Annenberg Grant for her book and exhibition project on AMERICA. Among her other awards are the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, the Matrix Award for outstanding woman in the field of film photography, and the Dr. Erich Salomon Award for outstanding merits in the field of journalistic photography. She was also presented with honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees from her Alma Mater, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of the Arts; three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts; the Photographer of the Year Award from the Friends of Photography; the World Press Award for Outstanding Body of Work Throughout the Years; the Victor Hasselblad Cover Award; two Robert F. Kennedy Awards; and the Creative Arts Award Citation for Photography at Brandeis University.

BRENT STIRTON - PHOTOGRAPHY - New York

Brent is a senior staff photographer for the Assignment Division for Getty Images. He specializes in documentary work and is known for his alternative approaches to photojournalism and his prolific work rate. He travels an average of 9 months of the year on assignment in his work for Getty Images, working exclusively on commissioned assignment. Brent holds a degree in Journalism from his native South Africa and photographs to visually interpret a story, often working in tandem with journalists from the world s leading publications. He works on a regular basis for the Global Business Coalition against Aids and The Global Fund against Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria. He also works in the field for sustainability for WWF, The World Wide Fund for Nature, shooting global campaigns on the relationship between people and their environments. He recently also began working for the Ford Foundation and the Clinton Foundation. In the last 2 years he works regularly with CNN s Christiane Amanpour and Anderson Cooper, compiling stills documentaries on topical news events which are then voiced over and aired. Brent is a multiple award winning photographer, receiving 4 awards from the World Press Photo Foundation and 3 awards from the UN for his humanitarian work, including Awards from the Global fund for his work in the field of HIV. He has finished runner up in the UNICEF GEO photographer of the year contest. Brent has also been recognized for his work on sexual abuse against women in African conflict and placed second for International Environmental Photographer of the year 2005 in a UNEP run competition. He has received 2 awards from The Society of American Publication designers, the Pictures of the Year contest and has been regularly selected for the Journal of American Photography, Graphis and The London Photographic Awards. Brent is obsessively preoccupied with getting to the heart of what he is shooting. His tight shooting schedule means that he seeks rapport with his subject immediately, moving towards the essence of the phenomenon he is seeking to reveal as quickly as possible. In this pursuit he often lights his documentary portraiture. In the cycle of human drama that is constantly presented to a working photo-journalist I think we have to find new ways to tell an old story. If we don t, we risk that story slipping into oblivion and falling off the radar of collective social responsibility. All I am trying to do is tell that story in the most powerful way I can under the limited circumstance that time brings to any story.

Jesse Alexander - Motorsports

His catalogue, a wonderfully crafted book entitiled Forty Years Of Motorsport Photography is a distillation of his photographic journey. Jesse has compiled in this volume a number of the finer images of his career. These photographs, as well as a selection from his new volume Driven The Racing Photography of Jesse Alexander 1954-1962 are featured here in the Gallery. Over the years his work has appeared in most of the worlds prominent automotive publications including Car & Driver, Road & Track and Automobile. In 1965, he covered the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Newsweek, and in 1967 his work was used in Sports Illustrated for a feature on motorcycle racing. Most recently, Jesse was commissioned by Nissan and it's Infiniti luxury division to photograph the drivers, crew, and race cars that made up the 1997 Infiniti Indy Project. Alexander has authored numerous books including At Speed, Forty Years of Motorsport Photography and Driven. His work has been exhibited in museums, galleries, and as part of an exhibition of sports photography at the 1996 Summer Olympics. A retrospective exhibition including more than 70 images travelled the world in 1998, sponsored by Chrysler Corporation.
