Photography by Elizabeth Holmes: Infrared hand painted silver gelatin photographs of rural landscapes cityscapes beach scences nature and people: I am drawn to images, wherever I find them that speak of memory, and have a timeless, haunting sense of space. As a child, I lived in a neighborhood divided down the middle by a highway expansion. Across the street, suddenly all the people were gone, but for a time the structures remained abandoned. I would wander in and out of those houses where my friends had lived. Years later, I found myself attracted to the abandoned buildings of Long Island, that had once been a thriving farm community. I started to photograph them, and other structures from a particular period, like the Art Deco buildings in South Florida. I found the same conflict of stability and constant change along the beaches and shorelines. I try to capture in my work what is fleeting and what remains timeless. I work with infrared film to create soft, grainy images that convey a sense of timelessness. Rich black shadows heighten the mood. And I use oils and pencils to add an impressionistic quality. With this process, I am able to enhance the emotional content of the image while retaining the realistic quality.

Photography by definition is the art of exposing light-sensitive materials to an array of light to form an image. It seems black and white, if you ll excuse the pun. An image on a piece of film for the purpose of recording an moment for later observation, nothing more. It is, however, a good deal more. Beauty can lie in the most homely of places, and can twist and dance into some obscure form that one would never have thought possible. Photography is much more than that simple capture of light. It is confining a world full of infinite beauties to a simple rectangle. A slice in time, never to be duplicated. My life revolves around this endless hunt for beauty in the most unexpected of places. It is my one true passion- the only thing I care about.
