Guter Vorsatz

Bernd Geh - Photographic Arts - ARIZONA
Born and raised in Germany, I moved to Arizona in 2001 where I finally found a place that feels like home. While being a physicist in my professional life - photography as a hobby began about 25 years ago when I was in my early twenties. After graduating in physics from the Ludwig Maximilan s University in Munich, I joined the company Carl Zeiss in 1988 - as a scientist in the research division. From 1992 to 1994 I worked in the Optics Metrology division as an Interferometry expert. In 1995 I joined the Metrology department of the Zeiss business unit for Lithography optics and in 2001 my company gave me the opportunity to relocate to Arizona. During that time I went on my first trips overseas. I have always been convinced that I ve only really been in another country when I had the opportunity to see the countryside, not the cities.I had not experienced Scotland until I stood on top of a mountain and could see the sea, the landscape and the shores of Ireland in the hazy distance. I have not felt Japan until I stood on Tsukuba Mountain or when I saw Lake Hakone. Tokyo is an impressive city but cities don t talk to me. Countryside does. So it is natural that I like to take photos of landscapes. But as I moved foreward I realized that there are other things that catch my attention as well. I like to take photos of people in everyday life situations, especially if they don t know that a picture is taken, where the photographer is really nothing more than an invisible observer - not interfering with his immediate environment. I realized that I have a particular interest in abstract structures. Be it the shapes of cracks in dry soil, the sometimes bizarre forms of rocks and dead trees Arizona is a great place to find these... or the ragged rind of old trees. I like to see and unravel things in these structures. Almost always you can find faces, especially after manipulations and merge image and mirror image. Analyzing my own work about what my intentions are, I realize...
