Fine Art and Stock Photography of Landscape Abstract Surreal Travel and Still Life by Tony Lilley. My personal work has covered a wide range of still photography in various formats including pinhole photography and black & white film and print processing. I have experimented with motion picture film and digital video including stop frame animation using film and digital camcorders to create short movies, mixing animated plasticene characters and real life events. I regard myself as both a Photographer and Artist who uses photography combined with other media to achieve my vision of a scene. One of my favourite ways of creating an image is to stage the whole thing as a real life set, or if this can t be done, I create individual parts and combine them digitally. I enjoy creating the artwork and models used to build a set scene for my creative images. Many of the objects that I use are old, re-cycled objects found in junk shops etc or just found washed up on the beach and some parts are from scanned materials and objects or from my own drawn artwork on paper. In the real world sets, I build a scene to tell a story, that is shown in some dynamic or animated way. The final image that you see, is produced by a carefully staged series of events that create the final picture. This maybe made up from controlling lighting during exposure and applying movement or smoke etc to the scene before the camera shutter closes. This has to be planned very carefully and is sometimes quite tricky to fit it all in before the shutter closes. I like to experiment with different ways of creating an image to give it a surreal, fantasy appearance and have an air of mystery. Eugene Smith Fund

W. Eugene Smith learned the hard way that photography could be too easy, a matter of making expert images of interesting subjects. He set himself to learn the truth - about himself as well as his subjects. In the process, he produced a series of photographic essays, for LIFE and other publications, whose passionate involvement set a standard for what photography can be. Gene Smith was a loner, a driving and driven man, who bucked the system of which he was a part. Some say he sacrificed his career, and himself, on an altar of self-destructive idealism. When he died at the age of 59 in 1978, he had 18 in the bank. But his name had become synonymous with integrity. His work was his memorial. Why, then, a memorial fund in his name? Those who knew Smith knew also that he needed friends at critical times. Many photographers today are working against the fashions and economics of modern publishing. The Fund was established in 1979 to seek out and encourage these independent voices. In the first twenty eight years of competition, from many thousands of proposals, the Fund selected 287 finalists who were seeking help in finishing major projects. Each was worthy of a grant. In one way or another, a finalist must approach Gene Smith s own high standards. I am a compassionate cynic, he wrote, yet I believe I am one of the most affirmative photographers around. I have tried to let the truth be my prejudice. It has taken much sweat. It has been worth it.

Der Freundeskreis John Heartfield Waldsieversdorf e. V. verfolgt das Ziel, Leben und Wirken von John Heartfield an seinem Sommersitz in Waldsieversdorf vorzustellen. John Heartfield, der Begründer der politischen Fotomontage, wurde als Helmuth Herzfeld am 19. Juni 1891 in Berlin-Schmargendorf geboren. Nach einer abgebrochenen Buchhändlerlehre und einer Ausbildung an Kunstgewerbeschulen in München und Berlin wurde er 1914 als Gardesoldat eingezogen, dann aber auf Grund einer simulierten Nervenkrankheit entlassen. Er verkehrte im Romanischen Caf mit der Berliner Boh me um Else Lasker-Schüler und mit George Grosz und gehörte der kleinen Gruppe junger Berliner Intellektueller an, welche sich frühzeitig der allgemeinen Kriegsbefürwortung entzog. Aus Protest gegen die antienglische Kriegspropaganda nahm er den Namen John Heartfield an und gründete mit seinem Bruder Wieland Herzfelde die oppositionelle Zeitschrift Neue Jugend und 1917 den nach einem Roman von Else Lasker-Schüler benannten Malik-Verlag . Einige Zeit später gehörte Heartfield auch zu den Initiatoren der Berliner Dada-Bewegung und trat gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder, George Grosz und Erwin Piscator der gerade gegründeten KPD bei. Nach einem Intermezzo als Ausstatter und Regisseur bei der UFA arbeitete Heartfield für Erwin Piscator an der Reinhardt-Bühne, engagierte sich für die KPD in deren grafischem Atelier und gab gemeinsam mit Kurt Tucholsky 1929 das viel beachtete Bilderbuch Deutschland, Deutschland über alles heraus. Ein Jahr später begann seine ständige Mitarbeit bei der Arbeiter-Illustrierten-Zeitung , für die bis 1938 die klassischen Fotomontagen zur Zeitgeschichte entstanden. 1933 floh der Künstler nach Prag und von dort 1938 weiter nach London.
