A CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY

A CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY

500 BC-documents found in Chinadescribe observation that reflectedlight waves of an illuminated objectpassing through a pin hole into a darkened enclosure result in an inverted but otherwise exact image of the object. During the next thousand years the Camera Obscura spreads throughout Asia and Europe. 1558-Giouanni Battista Della Porta (Italian) replaces pinhole in Camera Obscura with glass lens. 1701-Johnann Heinrich Schulze (German) describes manner in which some metallic compounds, notably silver, possessed the property of darkening when exposed to light. 1788-Jean Senebir (Italian) publishes “THE ACTION OF SUNLIGHT ON VEGETATION” in Geneva.....

A History of Photography from its beginnings till the 1920s - by Robert Leggat

A History of Photography from its beginnings till the 1920s - by Robert Leggat

This is not designed to be a course on the history of photography such as a resource to dip into. In addition to pen-portraits of many of the most important photographers of the period, it contains information on some of the most significant processes used during the early days of photography. The project was confined to the first eighty years or so, as this is often a convenient cut-off point in books and when dividing courses into a syllabus. To some extent this has been a frustration, in that there have been many important developments and many interesting photographers who practised during and subsequent to that date. It is hoped that a sequel will be forthcoming in due course. This work is intended to be of general interest, but it may also be a useful starting-off point for students preparing for courses which include brief study of the history of photography. The site will be revised regularly in the light of feedback and further study. Dr. Leggat has always had a commitment to encouraging photography amongst young people. He was Hon. Education Officer of the Royal Photographic Society for ten years, served on the Society s Council for some fifteen, and on its Executive for four. He was also former Chairman of the Society s Committee which receives and evaluates applications for Associateship and Fellowship in the Photography in Education category. A long-serving supporter of the Royal Photographic Society, he would encourage anyone with an interest in photography to...
