Old Tokyo - Vintage Tinted Images of the Japanese Capital City

Old Tokyo is a web site devoted to vintage hand-tinted postcard images of Tokyo Japan from around the turn of the 20th century 1903-1923. Tokyo today bears little resemblance to the city it was 100 years ago. That should not be unexpected. As with other great cities of the world -- London, New York, Moscow, Shanghai -- the Japanese capital has never been a city entirely held captive by time. But, perhaps, no other city has undergone as many levels of change, and as often, as has Tokyo. It has risen, Phoenix-like, from fires, earthquakes and war; each catastrophe giving city administrators, urban engineers and learned architects opportunities to transform, redesign and re-imagine what has been for centuries among the world s most populous cities. With the establishment of the Meiji Restoration, Japan s modernization began. Many modern practices, conveniences, and processes were imported, adopted, or acquired, including the Western-style printing press1 that would allow for the rapid reproduction and dissemination of artwork worldwide. Dutch traders introduced photography into Japan during the waning years of the Tokugawa shogunate; Japan s modern postal service was formed in 1871. These three developments combined together to create the e-hagaki, the Japanese picture postcard, the earliest of which displayed a unique blending of Old and New Japan. Similar in style to Western-style picture postcards then in vogue, e-hagaki combined Western technology with Japanese sensibilities. The subject matter was wide and varied: famous landmarks, tourist destinations, popular past times, scenes of everyday life, and important historical moments were all portrayed in color at a time when color photography did not exist. Long experience with traditional woodblock printing, ukiyo-e, enabled Japanese artists to reproduce subtle tinted colors, sometimes applied by hand, in ways that had not been before seen in the Western printing. Several things make this country famous, first off Japan is the most high tech country in the world, many cars, computers, video games, and other top of the line electronics are designed and built in Japan. Also famous are the cartoons and animation, commonly referred to as Japanimation that are watched all over the world. Aside from the high tech side of Japan, there are many natural and historic places throughout the country that attract travelers as well.

Tokyo has some of the most densely packed districts anywhere, and possibly the most trendy hi-tech consumer society, yet at the same time the traditional world of Japan still lingers there and can be seen by the observant eye. I have found this duality is one of the most fascinating aspects of Japan. Besides the hyper-active city life, there is the serenity of the gardens, the austere elegance of the temples, and a general appreciation of esthetics, which are so well expressed in Kyoto. Although it is sometimes a strange and disconcerting place, the country is free of petty crime, dishonesty, litter, and rudeness. Although they have embraced the 21st century more than any other nation, Japanese people are governed by traditional social values and etiquette and extend their civility to visitors. In April 1999, I spent two weeks in Japan, visiting the two main cities of Tokyo and Kyoto, with day trips to Nikko and Himeji. The timing let me enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms Sakura that are highly prized by the Japanese.

Mitte Mai 2001 besuchte ich mit 2 Freunden für 15 Tage die vielleicht schönste Stadt der Welt, Tokyo. Ursprünglich waren mehrere Zielorte wie zb. Kyoto und Osaka geplant, aber wir wollten nicht gleich alles auf einmal besuchen. Dies war auch eine gute Entscheidung, denn wie sich am Schluss rausstellte waren die 2 Wochen absolut zu kurz für die Stadt....
