Frank in Shanghai

Frank in Shanghai

Willkommen auf dem Shanghai-Foto-Blog von Frank Petzold. --- Welcome to the Shanghai-Photo-Blog of Frank Petzold. ....... As a "catcher",I am interested in recording what I see. There is something about making of photographs in public place that resonates with me more than any other kind of photography.I think it simply suits my personality. It is nice,When taking pictures in the street, not to have to participate in anyway in the stream of life passing you by;it makes me feel special to be there but not to be chatting, not to be shopping or not even to be heading for somewhere else.I feel like I am invisible to the passing crowds and this in turn leads to a loss of my sense of self which is the finest feeling of all. This street photography, this purity of approach,is potentially the most beautiful.Perhaps it is for the very reason that the photographs have no meaning,no function,no purpose to fulfill,no axe to grind,no ideology to speak of,that they please me as much as they do.It is the simplicity of the moment, the quality of the composition, which affect me.The fact that I saw something,a situation, that it moved me,that I wish to photograph it, that is enough. I take my camera everywhere because you never know when a lucky moment might happen.I really kick myself if I miss it.Luck is important but I think it helps to know what you are looking for.I always have to be on the look out,you never switch off. An unknown corner never fails to suggest it hides a wonder and so I am...

This is a tribute to Hong Kong.I have been to almost every Asian capital, including Singapore, Beijing, Bangkok, Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei, Phnom Penh, Manila, Kuala Lumpur. I have also travelled cities like Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dalian and many others. The only place I have never been to is South Asia, i.e. India. For me, Hong Kong is the most beautiful metropolis in Asia and always worth a visit!Hong Kong has almost everything of everything. In many aspects, it’s more (traditional) Chinese than most places in China, but also has a large Asian International community which makes it very cosmopolitan and sophisticated. Hong Kong also has a unique style of architecture, basically a cluster of super modern skyscrapers, run down high rise flats, street markets, shopping malls, huge advertising spaces, and most of all people, people people…!

I took a lot of pictures when I first came to China. Then less and later still less. In 1998 my battered Nikon FM2 was stolen. I'd had that camera since 1972; a lot of memories went with it. About a year later I bought an expensive toy digital with so so optics and enough time for a cup of coffee between pressing the shutter release and taking the...
