The New York Photo Festival :: The Future of Contemporary Photography
Photography, one of the most important visual media of our lives, has been surprisingly uncelebrated, particularly in the US. New York City, home to the most influential commercial and fine art photography community, has lacked until now a large-scale event dedicated to photography. The inaugural New York Photo Festival May 14 May 18, 2008 promises to deliver a dynamic, high-quality event in what is arguably the photographic capital of the world. The festival will celebrate both contemporary photography and the creative, inspirational talents of the people who produce this work. The New York Photo Festival will be headquartered in DUMBO, an off-the-beaten-track, but easily accessible neighborhood on the Brooklyn waterfront between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. Our group of internationally-respected curators will deliver their personal vision of the newest and most important trends in contemporary photography, each exhibited in their own pavilion and promising to draw the attention of the entire photographic community. Curators include Magnum photographer Martin Parr, The New York Times Magazine picture editor Kathy Ryan, Lesley A. Martin of the Aperture Foundation, and Tim Barber of tinyvices.com. In addition to the curated pavilions, the festival will offer visitors an extensive range of activities that will generate dialogue and buzz among all the communities of photo professionals, amateurs, students, and aficionados of art and culture: seminars, portfolio reviews, slide shows, book signings, photographic workshops, live performances and events, and a gallery row. The festival will also be documented online in a regularly updated virtual environment.

In September, 2006, Verve Gallery opened its expanded new space at 219 East Marcy Street. The renovated space includes a new large main exhibition gallery which houses current shows, as well as a smaller gallery dedicated to showing select works from Verve s represented artists. Web designer Wilson Scanlan, owns Verve Gallery which grew out of his company VerveLabs Web Design, which specialized in creating websites for artists working in all media. Scanlan founded Verve Gallery of Photography in 2002 to showcase contemporary fine art photography. Verve Gallery of Photography has developed an innovative and unique concept for exhibiting photographic images. A state-of-the-art computer system enables visitors to browse each artist s portfolios online, either at home or in the gallery. Patrons can peruse Verve s entire inventory of artist portfolios on a large LCD monitor in the gallery. This concept benefits patrons in that they can see an entire body of work and inspect work on file comfortably and effortlessly. The artists benefits because they are not required to consign an entire body of work to the gallery. The gallery benefits by providing access to entire portfolios online, stored electronically in Verve s database. The gallery thus utilizes its gallery space more efficiently. At Verve Gallery of Photography, the benefits of the computer revolution are at a patron s fingertips.

The Center for Creative Photography is an archive and research center located on the University of Arizona campus. We retain the archives of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Garry Winogrand, Harry Callahan, and other great 20th century photographers over fifty archives in all. The Center for Creative Photography was established in May 1975 with the purchase of five photographers archives, an operating budget of 75,000, and a staff of three. The inaugural exhibition, From the Center for Creative Photography, featured these founding archives Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock, Harry Callahan, Aaron Siskind, and Frederick Sommer. While these and future archives focused on twentieth-century American photography, the print collection was quickly developed to represent the larger history of photography as well as international practice. Collection development continues at a rate of one to three new archives per year, providing the centerpiece holdings to a now large and diverse representation of the art of photography.
