Thomas Dean was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He moved to the United States with his family when he was 3 year old. His formative years were spent in the Downriver community of Lincoln Park, Michigan. Thomas graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a degree in Communications. He later went on to become a Senior Director of Data Product Management and Development for a major telecommunications company. After college, Thomas turned to photography and writing as a creative outlet. He soon found that photography was far more than snapping a picture. Photography became a way to communicate his emotional response to the subjects he photographed. Today, Thomas pursues photography and writing full time.

Despite being successful in the medium, photography is more for personal satisfaction than anything else. Being able to convert my vision of the world, or even a particular scene, is something I find satisfying on quite a deep level. For the times I am able to capture that thought or vision on film, transfer it to paper, display it, and have that end product move another person on any level, then I consider that a success . None of the photographs contained herein, were done merely to record a place I have been...but were done to capture an emotion of the moment, from my point of view, that might otherwise have slipped away quite unnoticed. It is my hope that each person viewing this collection might find one piece of work that they might relate to, in a way only they can. If not, then at least someone may be prompted to stop for a moment to observe a beautiful and unique moment in their own life, that might have otherwise slipped by. I always appreciate the attention paid to my work, as well as the time spent by anyone just visiting this site.

Seemingly endless days of childhood outdoor play has grown into a true passion for nature and wilderness. For most of my life, Colorado has been my home and I enjoy and appreciate it s beautiful and diverse landscape. I specialize in landscape and nature photography. I love making images of both the intimate details and the grand scenic landscapes found throughout the natural world. I also enjoy world travel and the adventurous feeling of discovery it provides. I guess I m an explorer, at heart. My wanderings across the globe have given me the opportunity to make images in many wonderful locations. Yet there are still many, many places I yearn to explore. Although I often sell my images as fine art prints and for publication, I am not a full-time professional photographer. I trek into the backcountry and travel the world making images for my own pleasure. Through the images on this website, I hope to share my passion and reverence for nature, it s wild places and the wondrous excitement of traveling to foreign lands. I have lived most of my life in the Napa Valley, of Northern California. I currently live in the Sacramento area. Within a few hours drive of here are some of the most spectacular mountain vistas on Earth, but just right around the corner are scenes, unnoticed by most, just waiting to be captured at the right moment.

Beautiful photographs of the west and southwest. These images have been captured over the last twenty five years, using traditional film cameras in 35mm, 6x7 cm and 4x5 formats. My favored format is 4x5 which renders high quality and gives me great flexibility in creative control. The large format camera requires a slower, methodical approach that I find contemplative and satisfying. As an avid hiker, backpacker and general afficianado of wild and scenic places, fine art photography was a natural extension of my experience. The challenge for the landscape photographer is to capture the intimacy within the grandeur, what is first experienced as a shout may turn out as a whisper. In each way God s creation speaks to me, refreshing and settling me. Photographs are available in limited editions of one hundred, hand signed and numbered by the artist. Matting and framing incorperates archival, acid free materials. Prints are double matted with off white over black, 100 rag mattboard and framed in simple contemporary brown oak with clear acrylic for physical and ultaviolet protection. I recomend that prints purchased unframed be treated with similar conservation in mind. Only prints purchased matted and framed are guaranteed against fading or image degradation for the lifetime of the original purchaser.
