Australian Landscapes

Australian Landscapes

Australian Landscapes is a website presenting a unique collection of Australian imagesmade by the Digital Artistry Group, an eccentric bunch of Photographers who loveAustralia as much as they love their photography. A small bunch of photographers sharing a common love of photography and the Australian Outback drifted together a few years ago and formed the Digital Artistry Group. It was really just an excuse to get together regularly, enjoy each other's company and, inspired by the odd glass of red, exchange ideas and techniques involved with digital imagery. The realisation that collectively the group had an enormous library of images from every corner of Australia led to the idea for a web site through which they could share those images with others. The late Ron Pearsall was the inspiration and driving force behind the publication of the first Australian Landscapes web site in May 2001. Sadly, Ron died shortly after the launch and so this site also pays tribute to Ron and his outstanding photographic skills by presenting a special page of his work.

Landscape Photography of The Central Coast and other locations in Australia. My passion for photography began in the early 1980 s which followed from my keen appreciation of the texture, shapes and colours of the natural world. To me photography is about capturing the spirit of God s creation, be it the majesty of a glorious sunrise to the delicate beauty of a wildflower in bloom. The joy of photography, is that it has taught me to see , or rather to take the time to see .........and to be touched by God s living spirit. The photos were all taken using transparency slide film, and then printed using archival inks and papers to produce an image of exceptional colour rendition and most importantly excellent archival properties. It is this combination of archival inks and paper that produce images that have lightfastness properties which far exceed traditional silver-halide photographs. Also my photographic philosophy, is that photography is about capturing the moment. With this in mind, the utmost attention is given to ensure that the colours produced on the photographs are as close as possible to the transparency from which it originated. Finally with the exception of the smallest size available, all photographs have a realistic limited edition quantity of only 50 or 100 editions. They are individually signed and numbered with no further images produced once the limited edition number has been sold.

Completely self taught, Sam chooses to shoot primarily on specialist panoramic cameras, using film many times larger than a 35mm camera, allowing beautifully detailed enlargements to be made. By shooting at times of twilight, particularly pre-dawn hours, Sam is able to capture nature at its finest, moments where the world comes alive with vibrant textures and colours, created by nature without the use of coloured filters or digital manipulation. I choose to shoot all my landscape photos on film and using only natural light.. there s a much greater sense of satisfaction in knowing that what you have captured really happened, that the vibrant colours and textures seen by viewers were a moment in nature that i ve been lucky enough to witness. At only 26 years of age Sam s images are sure to become increasingly sought after as recognition for his natural abilities continues to grow.

AxOz Photography - IMAGES of NATURE & RURAL and URBAN panoramic Landscapes let me show you colours, forms and creatures of Gods creation!

Photography captured my imagination since early childhood. Although I was born in Germany, I grew up in South Africa which brought me in contact with the abundant and magnificent wildlife and plant life of Africa. I had the opportunity to live for a year in Botswana and have travelled extensively throughout Southern Africa. This has fostered a deep love for the natural environment and with my interest in photography it was a natural development that I would concentrate on taking images of nature. When observing nature one can get glimpses of paradise with the array of colours shapes and forms that abound on our globe. I am particularly endeared to the strong contrast and colours that can be observed during storms or early morning and late afternoons. The colours shapes and creatures that are in my images are a reflection of a fraction of a second that I have had the privilege to record on film. I truly hope that I can enrich your vision with the displayed images. During 1995 we decided to relocate to New Zealand and lived there for five years. New Zealand being the small growing islands that it is, exposed me to volcanoes, streams filled with trout and enchanting country sides. As a family we relocated to Canberra in Australia during 2000. The immediate surroundings reminded me a lot of Africa with its abundant flora and fauna. Every available time is spent documenting and exploring the different natural and geographical features of the Australian Capital Territories ACT...

I work with either a large format Horseman 4 x 5 inch camera with Nikkor 90mm, 75mm and 65mm lenses or a medium format Mamiya 7 Mk11 with the 43mm lens. Images made with these cameras can be printed up to 60 and beyond with stunning results. Prints made from the large format transparencies 4 x 5 can be made up to very large sizes 60 along the longest edge with zero loss in quality. The Horseman and Mamiya are great cameras and the lenses are unsurpassable for image quality. The difference between a 35mm slide or a file from a digital 8 or 10 Mpx camera and a 4 x 5 transparency is staggering. The tonal scale of the large format slides is far wider and less compressed - slight variations in tone that are lost in the smaller formats suddenly come alive and the level of fine detail available makes images much closer to the real thing. The Horseman large format camera allows attachment of different film backs to hold roll film thereby increasing the creative opportunities available by providing various different formats such as 6 x 6cm, 6 x 7cm, 6 x 9cm and 6 x 12cm and 6 x 17cm panoramic. With each of these backs the effect is like having a different focal length lens and also a different set of compositional options for framing the subject. Depending on the scene or current project, I ll select one of these roll film options, or simply use 4 x 5 sheet film, to shoot the image. A Sekonic L-608 lightmeter in combination with a tripod is used and the fact that there s only 2...
