Born in London, I became fascinated by reportage photography after visiting the Magnum In Our Time exhibition. A period in Barcelona teaching English cemented my ambition to be a photographer and I moved back to England in order to enrol on a Photography course which I managed to secure at Newport studying Documentary Photography in 1993. Whilst there I soon became interested in the work of Garry Winogrand, Tony Ray-Jones and Elliott Erwitt among others and I decided I wanted work along similar lines of personal expression rather than adhere to the socially conscious type of photojournalism that was popular amongst many photographers on the course. Like many of the photographers I ve admired over the years I initially did all of my street photography in black and white. I soon realised however that in order to differentiate myself from my predecessors, it would be better if I worked in colour. There were a few notable colour photographers such as Joel Meyerowitz, Alex Webb and Martin Parr whom I admired but I felt my style of work was more akin to the previously mentioned people. Working in London may not seem by most visitors conducive to good colour street photography, and indeed it certainly doesn t have anything like the beautiful light that say Brazil has. But with...

Timothy Allen was born in Tonbridge in the South East of England in 1971. At 22, after graduating from Leeds University with a BSc Zoology he left the UK and spent 3 years traveling around Indonesia where his interest in photography began. In the nineties, after beginning a part-time diploma in photography at Hereford College of Art and Design, Timothy joined an aid convoy to Bosnia in order to shoot his first year reportage project. Six months later he had left college, moved to London and begun working for the Sunday Telegraph, later inspiring commissions from all the British broadsheet publications and finally, a 6 year position at The Independent working predominantly on features and portraits. Timothy joined Axiom Photographic Agency in 2002 leading him to cover a dynamic and broad spectrum of global stories with subjects ranging from the civil war in the remote Spice Islands of far eastern Indonesia, to the intriguing subculture of The World Taxidermy Championships in Springfield , Illinois. In recent years, the focus of his work has turned to the planet s remaining tribal societies and he currently devotes his time to documenting the diversity of humanity s cultural heritage. He has worked with indigenous communities throughout the world , most extensively in India and South East Asia.
