This web site consists of photographs taken over a period of more than 50 years. After the box bellows cameras, and with early earnings, I purchased a German made Retina. It was a simple 35 MM. camera of post WW II design and manufacture. Because of the 35MM - 36-picture format, this camera got me hooked and I have made many snapshots with it using Kodak and Ilford b w film of good quality for that time period but still with considerable grain by to days standards.

Alain Bali photographer cutting edge photographs online gallery black and white photography fine art prints for sale portrait photography. I discovered years ago that the best way to explore color photography was to shoot black and white photos, in order to stay away from the standard canned color designed by Kodak and Company. I searched old chemistry books and pulled out toning formulas, intending to colorize B&W paper, or 4x5 black and white films sandwiched together. And yes, I even used Chloric Acid mixed with Nitric Acid, to carve the gelatin in order to apply organic dyes in layers. The result was amazing photo prints I was never able to reproduce ... Needless to say, for months afterward my hands were red, green and blue; my social and romantic life was dead almost , and my lungs have never forgiven me. The good news is that PhotoShop came to my rescue. The CMYK channels, Blur and Contrast are now pretty much all the tools I need. And, for the record, all of the photographs on this site have been shot on film. I prefer that my models find their own visual voice and, to that end, I encourage them to express themselves with abandon. My goal is not a still portrait requiring a half hour of posing but to catch a moment of spontaneous energy in which the model has perhaps forgotten she s before a camera. We work as a collaborative team, as people do in theatre. In 1995, prior to my participation in the Maine Photographic Workshops, I hired a model to gain experience and to create a portfolio. The workshop was pivotal to my work, as I refined what I had learned and developed my vision with the help of valuable criticism and the stimulus of working with other photographers. Later in 1995, I did a residency at Yaddo, the artists colony, in upstate NY. Although I was accepted on the strength of a novel I had written about a young felon based on my experiences at Noyes, I was given a studio in the woods and I used it for photography. Although I did do a great deal of writing the month I was at Yaddo, I found photography far more compelling. I photographed myself in many guises and poses, experimenting many days and hours, using different lighting and props. It was another pivotal experience. When I left Yaddo, I went in search of models with whom I could express my many ideas. In 1996, I was accepted into a group show at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Washington, DC. Also in that year, I sold a selection of prints. I now work with a small number of models who understand my visual goals...

My photos are most often about the kind of world I want to live in. Photography gives me a way to connect to this world - a world with quiet places of beauty, places of wonder, places that make me want to drink them in deeply - and to share them with others. I m in love with the natural world, with the diversity in all its forms of life both plants and animals , and with all the real people and real shapes within it. I m fascinated by the emotional range of the human temperament, and by finding it s reflections in the poses and expressions that people take on naturally. After getting a B.A. in Biology, I joined the Peace Corps and lived in Guatemala for a while, where I fell in love with travel as well. I took photos all the time and became fascinated with the variety of human culture, but then had a very bad accident. It was during the time of surgeries and learning to live with pain and physical limitations that I discovered my art. Making art is an amazing process, hard to understand or really describe. There are lots techniques to learn, lots of processes to figure out, and lots of studies to be made, but in the end I find that all that stuff only helps one to give the art a voice that is recognizable by others. The art itself comes from somewhere within and can scarcely be shaped or planned in a fully conscious manner. Ruth Bernhard has been one of my strongest influences, and I ve been particularly affected by the theme of one of her books, The Gift of the...
