Technological escalation between two or more entities is the product of the mind and creative invention. Escalation of technology not only results in the creation of more modern objects, such as improved navigation systems, more refined military hardware and leaps in the collection of information; but also can include the use of these material advancements for strategic use. The construction of the first submarines, used for exploration, took place in the early 1600 s. By the late 1700 s, the first submarines built for military purposes were partially the result of improved technology. By the 20th century, submarines used batteries for underwater propulsion, and ran diesel engines when running on the surface and to recharge the batteries. All large modern submarines utilize the technological leap of nuclear power and crews enjoy the benefits that this technology provides. Those benefits include being able to stay submerged for months at a time, and most have the ability to generate oxygen for the crew. Fresh water can be produced, and atmospheric monitoring systems ensure the safety of the crew. Modern submarines use inertial guidance navigation systems while submerged. To counter the problems created by drift error, Global Positioning Systems are employed on occasion to obtain an accurate assessment of position. Optical periscopes are rarely used in modern submarines. Instead, photonics masts equipped with sensors that monitor infrared, visible light, laser targeting and electromagnetic surveillance utilize the most modern of technological advancements. The decision to use advancements in submarine technology during World War II temporarily provided Germany with a devastating weapon on the open seas. Their decision to focus on the technology was motivated by the fact that Great Britain had an overwhelming naval fleet. One major innovation during this period that led to some of Germany s success, was the use of improved communications, encrypted using the Enigma...

Elan Fleisher Photography - Pictures of airplanes and the places they go.
This website is a fusion of three great passions: traveling, flying, and photography. I never aimed to create a website to showcase my work, but after amassing a range of photos it seemed natural to post them. Interested parties can now glimpse them at whim. For myself, I find it extremely rewarding to portray what is different and unique about other culture and places. The variety of what our world has to offer always presents new images and wonders. Exploring this world with a camera forces me to observe it more clearly and intimately. Fortunately, travel offers an inexhaustable range of new horizons and destinations to discover. I have been shooting professionally for about six years now, although I ve always carried a camera while traveling and until a few years ago, had always shot on slide film. Why slides? I guess because my Dad did. It was a treat as a child to be sat down with the family to see Dad s slide shows, usually of our travels. In my earlier years it never occurred to me not to shoot slides. Happily that also happenned to be the professional standard of the time which has changed entirely to digital photography and it got me in the habit of shooting on quality film from very early on.

The photos on this site were taken over a period from about 1988 to present. My interests originally included mostly military subjects, however with the lack of color on military aircraft these days I find airliners to be a more interesting subject. Cameras: Nikon. Over the years I have used Nikon N2000, 8008s, N90s and F100 bodies. Lenses have ranged from marginal non-Nikon lenses to an assortment of Nikon lenses including the workhorse 80-400 VR lens. I now use the Nikon D200 for the vast majority of photos. Film: Fuji Provia 100F. This film has the finest grain of any slide film currently on the market. I used to shoot Kodachrome 25 and 64 film. This film offered excellent color especially K25 and long archival properties.
