HELLENIC PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF CRETE - IRAKLIO CRETE

The Hellenic Photographic Society, Crete which began its activities in 1964, setting as its goals the promotion and expansion of photography, has succeeded in elevating standards of photography to the highest levels, creating a powerful presence in both national and international fields. Abundant and enviable work from all its members, but especially from the International Photographers group, have given the Society world-wide recognition. Thousands of entrants have been made, and awards and commendations received, in international competitions and exhibitions of photography all over the world. The unmatched portraits of the Cretan School have established it world - wide, making a unique mark. With this glowing past and a powerfully promising present and future, activities continue with photographic exhibitions, seminars on photography and the functioning of a New Photographers section, with large numbers of members of all ages participating in an annual programme of seminars and educational outings. The Cretan section of the Hellenic Photographic Society H.P.S. was founded in Iraklio in 1964. Love for the art of photography prompted a group of people to set as their goal the further expansion of this art form, along with the initiation into its secrets of as many others as possible. In the early days of its establishment meetings were held on the private premises of its members until a suitable permanent building could be rented. These are the same premises as those in use today, just as the Society s aims have remained unchanged. The H.P.S. has welcomed hundreds of members into its ranks who have both dedicated much to, and received much from , photography. The members of the H.P.S. work in a variety of jobs and professions but all share the same love of artistic photography and are noted for their amateur passion.
