Picturing the Crisis
"Where is the crisis?" Brian Ulrich asked a couple of days ago wondering why there is so little in-depth photographic reaction to the rapid transformation of the state of things. Just be patient! US photographers have never failed to come up with iconic images of major or minor turning points in American history. It might just take some time.
For momentary lack of iconic imagery of the current crisis (this year's WPP-winner does not fully qualify), everybody looks back at Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother", the dominant picture of the Great Depression. The 1936 portrait of Florence Owens Thompson and her children has near mythical status which is not impaired by the fact that it was (if only slightly) retouched and that Thompson many years later was quoted as saying: "I wish she (Lange) hadn't taken my picture. I can't get a penny out of it. She didn't ask my name. She said she wouldn't sell the pictures. She said she'd send me a copy. She never did." Obviously it is an essential ingredient of iconic images to be disputed. One of Thompson's grandsons seems to have come to terms with Lange's alleged transgression: he sells T-shirts with his grandmother's famous portrait on them.
So much for picturing the crisis over there. Over here however we don't have as much easiness and routine in producing iconic images. Moreover the surfaces have not yet changed as much as they have over there. Let's hope it stays that way (even if it makes documenting the crisis more challenging).

Fritz Pölking, geboren 1936 in Krefeld.

Explore the World ! View and share photos taken at beautiful places of the world. Panorama Explorer is a photo sharing community which allows you to view, share and store your photos. You keep the copyright of your photos. The photos are published resized but with no other modifications. It is free and will stay free ! Most of the photo sharing applications have their photos organized by keywords. Panorama Explorer takes a step further. Searching is now possible on a 2-D map. To make this possible, the photos have to be positioned with the appropriate coordinates. Therefore the geographical environment becomes a very important keyword . Just think about it : buildings in Helsinki look quite different to those in Paris. Users of Panorama Explorer are able to group a bundle of photos and view them in a slide show. Those slide shows can be stored and requested from any browser on the internet. The application provides the appropriate editing functions to manage them. Last but no least - this is a very ambitious goal. But some time in the future, Panorama Explorer will be able to provide photos from any spot of the earth. To achieve this Panorama Explorer heavily depends on you !

Veterans For Peace is a national organization founded in 1985. It is structured around a national office in Saint Louis, MO and comprised of members across the country organized in chapters or as at-large members. There is an annual convention each year attended by our members, families and supporters from across the nation. Members receive periodic VFP publications. The organization includes men and women veterans of all eras and duty stations including from the Spanish Civil War 1936-39 , World War II, the Korean, Vietnam, Gulf and current Iraq wars as well as other conflicts. Our collective experience tells us wars are easy to start and hard to stop and that those hurt are often the innocent. Thus, other means of problem solving are necessary. Veterans For Peace is an official Non-Governmental Organization NGO represented at the UN. Whether or not you wish to participate in chapter activities, please consider becoming a Veterans For Peace member. As an organization, we are what our members make us. You can be part of that effort. Help us put an end to war. We draw on our personal experiences and perspectives gained as veterans to raise public awareness of the true costs and consequences of militarism and war - and to seek peaceful, effective alternatives.
