Black White World: A Celebration of Photography. Photoshop monochrome techniques

Black & White World: A Celebration of Photography. Photoshop monochrome techniques

Ezine dedicated to traditional and digital Black and White Photography. Why process and print your black-and-white photos instead of sending them to a lab? Quality and control: both are diminished the moment you let someone else process your photographs. If you have the time and commitment, processing your own work will give you an amazing amount of control--and creativity. The down side to control is that you need to know what to do, and do it well. So although this column is for beginners, it will get technical. Sorry about that. (Remember: every technology requires a learning curve.)By the time you finish this column, you'll be an expert in the basics needed to process black-and-white film (assuming you read it dilligently and practice, practice, practice). Print it out and paste it over your film processing workspace for handy reference.

CCD-ASTRO-PHOTOGRAPHY by Arie Nagel, Netherlands

CCD-ASTRO-PHOTOGRAPHY by Arie Nagel, Netherlands

My hobby is ASTRO-PHOTOGRAPHY, i.e. photography of the sun, moon, planets, stars, asteroïds and comets. Also nebulae, within or outside our galaxy. After years of practicing 'wet-photography', I started ccd-photography during fall 1997. The beauty of ccd-photography is that you have instant results. Furthermore the results are digital, so they are ready for computer-imaging. And in light-polluted areas, ccd-cameras can detect weaker lights than would be the case with conventional cameras. However, ccd-cameras are expensive. The larger the ccd-chip, the more expensive. Therefore most people use cameras with a tiny chip. A common camera is the ST-8 type of SBIG, which uses a chip of 9.2 x 13.8 mm. It is like photographing the heavens through a key-hole. However, most objects are small and fit within this area when using an amateur telescope.

My CCD-career started in 1995 with an ST-6,after having bought my first computer ever. The ST6 was followed by an Apogee AM13,a Fleischmann Megatek and the ST10XME,which allowed me for the first time to take wonderful color pictures of deep sky objects, because of its extended blue sensivity. In 1998 I could manage to get one of the first 16 -Hypergraph instruments from Philipp Keller, the twin of which is now installed in Namibia by my friend Bernd Schröter. This instrument will be rentable to interested amateurs by the end of 2005. Since 2002 I visited the Namibian farm TIVOLI every year for about 2 weeks for observations with the southern Hypergraph under very favourable dark skies. Here at home, the nothern Hypergraph is my most used instrument now, even if the aperture is quite large for my unfavorable observing site amid a town of about 6000 inhabitants. The mounting I use since 1983 is a selfbuilt one, with 80mm axis of steel and a high precision 360 teeth gear from Eckard Alt.For better seeing,I use no dome or hut.I observe under the open sky, with my instruments inside the house during bad weather most of the time here in W-Europe . I am now part of the new formed Spiegelteam and for me its very pleasing to learn all this new stuff from my younger friend Volker, who is very patient to me...:-
