Fred Stein Archive Portfolio

Fred Stein Archive Portfolio

Fred Stein s photographs capture powerful images of the struggle and beauty of human life - images that transcend the cultural moment: the romance of street life in 1930 s Paris; the energy of New York during and just after World War II; and hundreds of compelling portraits of the most brilliant minds of the time. In the words of Herman Wouk: Fred Stein has recorded the central years of our century with a flood of pictorial impressions, and a multitude of faces, famous and anonymous, which will illuminate the period forever. - Stein died in 1967 at the age of 58. His portraits and reportage had appeared in newspapers, magazines, and books throughout the world. He had also lectured and had held a number of one-man exhibitions. Seven books of his work have been published. During his lifetime his work received favorable critical attention, and the scope and power of his work are now gaining wide recognition.

Aaron Siskind (1903-1991)

Aaron Siskind (1903-1991)

The Aaron Siskind Foundation's Individual Photographer's Fellowship (IPF) grant program encourages and celebrates artistic achievement in contemporary photography by supporting the creative endeavors of individual artists working in still photography and photography-based media. Beginning his photographic career in the 1930’s as a social documentarian with the New York Photo League, he ultimately radicalized the medium by emphasizing the photograph as an abstract form of expression and an aesthetic end in itself. Siskind taught in New York City's public schools for 25 years before becoming recognized as a photographer and then a gifted pioneer of photographic education. His vision and methods have and will continue to inspire and instruct future generations of artists and teachers.

Japan-Photo.info

Japan-Photo.info

In the beginning my interest in Japanese photography was focussed on modern photography of the 1920s and 1930s and I did a research about this period during an 18 months stay in Japan at the end 1990s. During this stay I met many younger photographers and soon I became fascinated by the contemporary photography scene in Tokyo. The photography scene in Japan is very vivid, especially in Kanto (Tokyo, Yokohama, Kawasaki area) and Kansai (Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe area) with most photographers living there, with several photography collections in museums with very active curators, with many galleries and several photo book shops.Unfortunately many Japanese photographers are almost unknown outside Japan and just a part of the photography book production finds its way to a few specialized books stores in the West. Moreover Japanese photography exhibitions are rarely reviewed in the West, even the most interesting exhibitions don’t travel abroad and catalogues to museum exhibitions are virtually unavailable outside Japan. With my blog Japan-Photo.info I hope to give some help to navigate through the complex and ever changing scene. My main focus is at Japanese photography books - one remarkable characteristic of Japanese photography is the huge book production - and at information about Japanese photography exhibitions in- and outside Japan.

Circolo Fotografico Milanese

Circolo Fotografico Milanese

Alpa Reflex Cameras from Switzerland

Alpa Reflex Cameras from Switzerland

The main goal of this web site is to share information about Alpa Reflex cameras with all web participants and to ask collectors to provide any information that will help complete the Alpa history. The story of the Alpa Cameras starts with a Ukrainian engineer and designer named Jacques Bogopolsky, based in Geneva, who developed a 35mm cine camera aimed at the growing amateur cine market. The design was patented in 1924 as the BOL-Cinegraphe. However as the popularity of sub standard film gauges took favour, Jacques produced a 16mm camera, the Auto Cine camera. This was the first product sold under the Bolex name. In 1930 Jacques sold the business to Paillard, of Switzerland, which was founded in 1814 by Moises Paillard making musical box movements. At the end of the nineteenth century the Paillard family joined the Thorens family by marriage and started producing phonographs, gramophones, clockwork motors and typewriters....
