Lawrence Collection ~ Ireland 1890 Photographs of Towns and Villages at the turn of the 19th century

The PHOTOGRAPHS in this series are the best from the Lawrence Collection which shows the character of Irish Towns and Villages around 1880 to 1910. On the 20th March 1865 at the age of 24 William Mervin Lawrence opened a Photographic Studio opposite the G. P .O. at Sackville street Dublin. Over the years the studio successfully photographed the length and breadth of Ireland from Howth Head in the East to Achill Head in the West ,and from Malin Head in the North to Skibbereen the South). The collection consists of 40,000 glass plates mainly from the period 1880-1914, but some plates go back to 1870.Lawrence was not himself a photographer, but an early entrepreneur,He opened his Studio in his mother's toy and fancy -goods shop (see photograph right)At that time there was great interest in Studio Portraits and he employed a portrait photographer. At that time his brother, John Fortune Lawrence, took stereo photographs and William took a keen interest in them ,and took over the sales. He employed a team of printers, artists (colourists and retouches). In 1880 when the dry plate process came in William Lawrence employed Robert French as his chief Photographer French was born in Dublin and spent some time working in the Royal Irish Constabulary, then joined Lawrence Studio, and he worked his way up as printer, artist and then assistant photographer. He took over 30,000 photographs of the "Lawrence Collection".

Leodis - a photographic archive of Leeds

Leodis - a photographic archive of Leeds

Leodis is an online photographic archive containing over 48,000 images of Leeds, old and new and is managed by Leeds Library and Information Service. The Local Studies Library in Leeds has a huge collection of photographs relating to the city. Before the Leodis site was set up these were only accessible by visiting the library and searching card indexes. The Library service was keen to promote the collections and make them more easily accessible for a wider audience. The Council Internet team initially added some photographs to the Leeds City Council site to gauge demand. The high level of interest led to the creation of the Leodis site. A grant was obtained from the New Opportunities Fund now the Big Lottery to fund the project for two years. The Library Service managed the project, which aimed to make available 40,000 images of Leeds. The main collections from the Local Studies Library have been added to the site as well as local collections held in branch libraries such as Morley, Rawdon, Rothwell and Horsforth. Local partners, Leeds Civic Trust, the Thoresby Society, Leeds Museums and Galleries and West Yorkshire Archive Service have also provided material from their photographic collections to be added to the site. The largest collection of photographs on the site is the City Engineers collection. These were photographs taken for the City Council from around 1890 to the 1960s of areas of municipal concern such as pre slum clearance or road alterations. These were taken...

The Camera Club of Cincinnati, Ohio USA

The club was originally part of the Cincinnati Society of Natural History and officially known as "The Photographic Section of the Cincinnati Society of Natural History". The Camera Club of Cincinnati was founded in January of 1884, making it one of the oldest camera clubs in the country. The club was originally part of the Cincinnati Society of Natural History and officially known as "The Photographic Section of the Cincinnati Society of Natural History". By 1890, the membership numbered over 130 and had headquarters at 108 Broadway. Meetings were held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month. In 1960 the club moved to 123 E. 5th Street, in 1967 to above the old Part Theater. In 1980 the club moved to 3837 Spring Grove Avenue, then in 1987 to 5917 Hamilton Avenue where it remained for 13 years. In 2000 the club moved to its current location at 7045 Vine St. in Carthidge.
